Engagement Rate Formula: How to Calculate ER on Every Platform
By Team EngagementRateCalc
The Three Engagement Rate Formulas
The engagement rate formula is: (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100. This is the most common method. You can also calculate by reach (engagements ÷ reach × 100) for more accuracy, or by impressions (engagements ÷ impressions × 100) for paid content. The engagements included depend on the platform.
There are three main ways to calculate engagement rate. Each gives you different insights depending on what data you have access to. According to Hootsuite’s guide to engagement rate calculation, the follower-based method remains the industry standard, while reach-based is increasingly preferred by agencies for organic content evaluation.
Formula 1: By Followers (Most Common)
ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100
This is the industry standard. It is simple, requires no analytics access, and is what most brands use for influencer vetting.
Best for: Quick benchmarking, comparing creators, public data analysis.
Formula 2: By Reach (Most Accurate)
ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100
Reach-based ER accounts for the actual number of people who saw your post. This is more accurate because not all followers see every post.
Best for: Evaluating content quality, internal performance tracking, brand reports.
Formula 3: By Impressions
ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Impressions) × 100
Impressions count total views (including repeat views by the same person). This gives the lowest ER number but is useful for ad performance tracking.
Best for: Paid content analysis, Twitter/X metrics, ad campaign reporting.
What Counts as “Engagements” by Platform
Each platform has different interaction types that count toward engagement:
| Platform | Engagements Included |
|---|---|
| Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares | |
| TikTok | Likes + Comments + Shares |
| YouTube | Likes + Comments |
| Reactions + Comments + Reposts | |
| Twitter/X | Likes + Reposts + Replies |
| Reactions + Comments + Shares |
Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Let’s calculate the engagement rate for an Instagram account:
- Followers: 25,000
- Average Likes: 800
- Average Comments: 45
- Average Saves: 120
- Average Shares: 35
Total Engagements = 800 + 45 + 120 + 35 = 1,000
Engagement Rate = (1,000 ÷ 25,000) × 100 = 4.00%
This falls in the “Good” tier for Instagram in 2026. Use our Instagram engagement rate calculator to do this calculation instantly.
Which Formula Should You Use?
For brand pitches: Show both By Followers and By Reach. Followers-based is the standard brands expect, and Reach-based demonstrates content quality.
For content optimization: Use By Reach. It tells you how well your content performs with the people who actually see it, removing the variable of algorithmic reach.
For ad analysis: Use By Impressions. This matches how ad platforms report performance and is available for Twitter/X (by impressions) and LinkedIn (by impressions).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing formulas — Always compare like-for-like. A 4% by-followers rate is not the same as 4% by-reach.
- Forgetting optional metrics — Saves on Instagram are huge engagement signals. Include them.
- Not accounting for follower tier — A 3% rate for a Mega account (1M+) is excellent, but average for a Nano account (under 10K). See our full benchmarks by follower tier for context.
- Checking too frequently — Individual posts vary wildly. Track monthly averages.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the engagement rate formula?
The most common formula is: Engagement Rate = (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100. You can also calculate by reach or impressions depending on your analysis goals. Each method provides different insights into content performance.
What counts as engagements on each platform?
It varies by platform. Instagram counts likes, comments, saves, and shares. TikTok counts likes, comments, and shares. YouTube counts likes and comments. LinkedIn counts reactions, comments, and reposts. Twitter/X counts likes, reposts, and replies. Facebook counts reactions, comments, and shares.
Should I use followers, reach, or impressions in my formula?
Use By Followers for quick benchmarking and influencer comparisons. Use By Reach for the most accurate view of content performance with actual viewers. Use By Impressions for paid content and ad campaign analysis.
Can I use the same formula across different platforms?
